Morning Missions with the World Affairs Council

The Library and the Colorado Springs World Affairs Council invite you to presentations featuring world class presenters speaking on global issues. This month, Stephen Kinzer will discuss “Rwanda Genocide and the Aftermath.” These presentations are offered free to young people ages 14-18 in the East Teen Center at East Library. They include breakfast and a chance for teens to interact with superb speakers brought to the area by the World Affairs Council. The programs will also be simulcast on The Library Channel, Comcast 17, and instant messaging with a teen librarian and the speaker will be available at ppld.org/teens. Space is limited to 25 attendees. To RSVP, email dvazquez@ppld.org.

Counterterrorism expert speaking to teens.

Pikes Peak Library District and the Colorado Springs World Affairs Council are teaming up to present Morning Missions with the World Affairs Council. These programs, targeted at teens ages 14 - 18, will feature world class presenters on topical global issues.

On Thursday, December 11 at 8 a.m., the first offering in this series will bring Fred Burton to the East Teen Center. (Attendance is invitation-only.) Burton is Vice President for Counterterrorism and Corporate Security at Stratfor, the world’s largest global intelligence company. He will talk about how he got into the counterterrorism field and his life as a counter-terror agent. The presentation will be simulcast on The Library Channel, Comcast 17. Burton will answer questions sent in via instant messaging through the widget at ppld.org/teens.

Pikes Peak Workforce Center presents youth workshops

The Youth Zone at the Pikes Peak Workforce Center will offer the following workshops for youth, 14 through 21, in November.  There is no charge to attend. Register online at http://www.ppwfc.org, click on the Youth Zone icon or call 719.667.3790.

November 5 - Motivation: Choosing Success. 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Everyone wants and deserves to succeed.  Youth do too!  This workshop focuses on the importance of setting long-term, short-term, and immediate goals.  Overcoming obstacles and worry will be discussed.  Information on different types of colleges and the importance of choosing a school that fits an individual’s needs will be discussed.  Attendees you will complete a personality assessment and will receive a personal notes page for later reference.

November 12 - Career Preparation: Building Your Professional Self. 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

This interactive presentation focuses on the importance of beginning a career sooner rather than later. It stresses the benefits of any job and the experience that is gained through a job. And, the importance of writing a resume will be covered. Attendees will complete a personality assessment and review proper interview etiquette through role playing.

November 19 – Building Your Self Confidence. 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

This workshop teaches youth ways to overcome negative thoughts and how to grow their strengths. Discipline will be defined and the benefits of a disciplined life style will be discussed.

Teen Read Week kicks off at the ETC on Monday, October 27th with Movie Night! In keeping with this year’s theme, “Books With Bite,” we’ll be showing VanHelsing at 6:30 in the ETC.
* Tuesday, October 28, it’s an all-day Chocolate Movie Marathon, featuring Chocolat from 10am-12pm, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory from 1pm-3pm, and Blood and Chocolate from 6pm-8pm.
* Wednesday, October 29, try your hand at turning food into art at the ETC, plus we have another Movie Night (this time at the Penrose Library downtown), and we’ll be showing 1408.
* Thursday, October 30, it’s Food Fear Factor! Put your palate to the test with an assortment of unusual delicacies!
* Friday, October 31 (Halloween!), be sure to attend our annual Masquerade Ball at the ETC from 6:30 to 8:30! (More details below.)
