View Vieux Farka Touré live at CC

World Music Series 2009KRCCVieux Farka Touré performed his modern take on the music of Mali at Colorado College’s Armstrong Hall on September 21 for PPLD’s World Music Series 2009. The show was presented by KRCC Concerts.

Below, watch Touré and his band play Diaraby Magni, alternating from mellow, funky grooves to blistering, bluesy guitar solos all over percussion that melds traditional African rhythms with rock and jazz drumming. The video was produced by PPLD’s Video Production Center. Other Library productions – including additional World Music Series shows, features on local visual artists, and presentations by prominent authors – can be seen at PPLD.TV.

Watch Issa Bagayogo performance from World Music Series show at Colorado College

Issa Bagayogo, from Mali, played an enthralling show at Colorado College’s Armstrong Hall on August 6 as part of PPLD’s World Music Series. The packed house swayed and danced to the beat of a unique blend of traditional African music (including Bagayogo on n’goni) and modern dance beats.

Touré bringing desert blues to CC

KRCC Concerts presents the music of Vieux Farka Touré as part of PPLD’s World Music Series 2009. Touré’s music is chiefly informed by the desert blues of Mali (including that of his father, the late and legendary Ali Farka Touré), but includes elements of several other genres, including funk and Afro-pop. He has emerged from the large shadow of his father’s legacy with his own expressive voice and talent on the guitar.

The show is free. However, a donation of two non-perishable food items for Care and Share is suggested and appreciated.

Bagayogo is world renowned as a master of modern Malian music. His songs are an eclectic blend of traditional acoustic sounds, funk, reggae, and electronica. (You can listen to a couple of his tunes below.) Bring some friends and a picnic dinner and enjoy the show, which is brought to you by PPLD, Colorado College, and KRCC Concerts.

La Fanfare du Belgistan performs Iggy Bop

World Music Series 2009As part of PPLD’s World Music Series 2009, La Fanfare du Belgistan played a well-attended show at Colorado College’s Armstrong Quad on Friday, July 17. You can watch that evening’s performance of the song Iggy Bop below.

La Fanfare du Belgistan coming to Colorado College for World Music Series 2009

La Fanfare du BelgistanWorld Music Series 2009 continues on at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 17 at Colorado College’s Armstrong Quad. (Armstrong Theater is the rain backup venue.) Come enjoy La Fanfare du Belgistan’s unique sound at this free event.

World Music Series 2009Hailing from the fictional Belgistan region of Eastern Belgium, their tantalizing music incorporates a variety of classic and exotic instruments, from trumpets to karbakas. Inspired by Arab and Gypsy music, La Fanfare updates traditional forms by fusing them with elements of trance, dance, and jazz music. The show is presented by PPLD, Colorado College, and KRCC Concerts. You can listen to a couple of their songs below.

Watch Quetzal’s ode to libraries

On June 12, Quetzal from East L.A. performed at Colorado College’s Armstrong Quad to kick off PPLD’s World Music Series 2009. They closed the show with the funky, improvised song “Librarian Love,” which you can watch below.

World Music Series 2009 There are two more shows in this year’s series, both also at Armstrong Quad (with Armstrong Hall as a rain backup venue) at 7 p.m.: La Fanfare du Belgistan on Friday, July 17 and Issa Bagayogo on Thursday, August 6.

Quetzal kicks off World Music Series 2009

World Music Series 2009QuetzalWorld Music Series 2009 kicks off June 12 with a free performance by Quetzal. Their music combines Mexican and Cuban rhythms, jazz, and rock behind the powerful vocals of siblings Martha and Gabriel Gonzalez. The group was formed in East Los Angeles by guitarist-composer Quetzal Flores, who wanted the band to not only have a unique sound, but also a social consciousness. They have been hailed by Los Lobos and others as the new torch bearers of Chicano music. The World Music Series is presented by PPLD, Colorado College, and KRCC Concerts. There will be two more free shows in the series this summer: La Fanfare du Belgistan on July 17 and Issa Bagayogo on August 6.

Looking for some smooth Brazilian bossa nova and samba? Then check out Caji and Salomé on The Library Channel starting Saturday, September 20 at 7 p.m. This was the second band in our 2008 World Music Series at Colorado College and the performace was superb (and bilingual!).
